In the early 1970s I was a North Carolinian, white boy from the South attending Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and working in East Harlem as part of a program. In my senior year, I visited men at the Bronx House of Detention. I had never been in a prison or jail, but people in East Harlem were dealing with these places and the police all the time. This experience truly turned my life around.

Iran: Prisoner Hanged in Public

Public hanging, Iran
Iran Human Rights (Nov 17 2017): A prisoner was hanged in public in Babol (Northern Iran) on murder charges.

According to the human rights news agency, HRANA, on the morning of Monday November 13, a prisoner was hanged in public in Babol (a city in Mazandaran Province).

The prisoner, identified as Abbas B., 28, was sentenced to death on the charge of murdering a young man during a street fight.

The report mentions that efforts were made to win the consent of the plaintiffs until the last minute, but it was unsuccessful and the execution was carried out.

Although the execution was carried out in public a few days ago, the Iranian state-run media have not announced it so far.

According to Iran Human Rights annual report on the death penalty 33 people have been executed in public in front of large crowds including children in 2016.

Public executions have been strongly criticized by Iranian human rights activists and sociologists.

Prisoner hanged in western Iran

Iran Human Rights (Nov 19 2017): A prisoner was executed at Ilam Central Prison (Western Iran) on murder charges.

According to a close source, on the morning of Saturday November 18, a prisoner was hanged at Ilam Central Prison.

The prisoner, identified as Alireza Sadeghi, was sentenced to death on the charge of murdering a man during a street fight.

“Alireza got into a fight with a man named Behruz Yekravi at Imam Square in Ilam two years ago and killed him with a knife,” said an informed source to Iran Human Rights (IHR).

The execution of this prisoner has not been announced by the state-run media so far.

According to Iran Human Rights annual report on the death penalty, 142 of the 530 execution sentences in 2016 were implemented due to murder charges.

There is a lack of a classification of murder by degree in Iran which results in issuing death sentence for any kind of murder regardless of intensity and intent.
